Midnight Season 2 Catalyst BiS Conversion List

The Catalyst used to launder your worst raid drop into a tier piece with clean stats. In Season 2 it keeps the donor's secondaries, tertiaries, sockets AND cantrip effects - so it can no longer fix bad itemization, and what you feed it is finally a real decision. Feed it wrong and you wear that mistake until the next charge.

What changed in 12.1

  • The Catalyst now preserves the donor item's secondary stats when it converts it into a tier piece. The tier set's own fixed stat spread is discarded. confirmed
  • Tertiary stats (Leech, Speed, Avoidance) carry over too, as do gem sockets on the donor item. confirmed
  • Cantrip effects survive the conversion. The four Very Rare cantrip armor pieces from Ula'tek keep proccing after they become tier. confirmed
  • Because stats are preserved, the Catalyst can no longer be used to fix a badly itemized piece - it can only move a set bonus onto stats you already have. confirmed
  • Converting off-set slots (belt, boots, cloak) is now purely a transmog exercise - there is no stat benefit left in it. confirmed
  • Slots affected by the tier set bonus are the same five as always: Head, Shoulders, Chest, Hands, Legs. confirmed
  • The Slumbering Coil Curio - the Very Rare omni-token from Ula'tek - is turned in near the Catalyst in Silvermoon with Kirana for any class set piece you like. It is not a Catalyst charge and costs none. confirmed
  • Whether embellishments survive the conversion is not stated by any source we read. Assume nothing until Blizzard or a datamine says so. estimated

Catalyst timing

  • The Catalyst device itself is available in Silvermoon City from 12.1 launch, the week of August 11. confirmed
  • Charges start accruing when Season 2 opens the week of August 18 - you get your first charge at season start, not weeks into it. confirmed
  • After that it is one charge every two weeks, granted automatically to every character with no action required. confirmed
  • Charges cap at 8 per character, so banking them forever is not a plan. confirmed
  • The Season 2 charge currency is Venomblight Manaflux (the achievement version is Crystallized Venomblight Manaflux). confirmed
  • The Midnight Season 2: Serpent Scion achievement grants one extra charge - earned from 1600 rated PvP, 2000 Mythic+ rating, or killing Ula'tek on Heroic or Mythic. confirmed
  • Unlocking your 4-piece set bonus turns on Catalyst Unbound, which lets charges drop from raid bosses, Mythic+, Delves and rated PvP on top of the automatic schedule. confirmed
  • PTR builds carried a fragment system (five fragments to a charge) and the tooltips disagreed with each other. Treat any fragment-based math you read elsewhere as pre-launch and stale. estimated
  • Practical read: charges 1 and 2 land in Season 2 weeks 1 and 3. Every guide we read says the same thing - take the 4-set with wrong secondaries before you wait two more weeks for the right donor. confirmed

Where the tier tokens drop

Five of the eight Venomous Abyss bosses drop a tier token, one slot each. Ula'tek also drops the Very Rare Slumbering Coil Curio, an omni-token you trade for any slot you like. Cloth = Mage, Priest, Warlock. Leather = Demon Hunter, Druid, Monk, Rogue. Mail = Evoker, Hunter, Shaman. Plate = Death Knight, Paladin, Warrior.

How to read this list
  • Every spec gets all five tier-bonus slots. A slot where the token is simply the right answer still appears - we never quietly drop a row.
  • Rank 1 is the donor that spec's live 12.1 Icy Veins guide names. Rank 2 and rank 3 are our own ranking of the rest of the field.
  • Every pick carries a confidence word. Confirmed means a live source named it. Estimated means we ranked it ourselves from armor class, slot and stat priority.
  • A spicy pick is a contested or expensive one - usually a boss 7 or boss 8 drop, which on Mythic is 344, above the crest cap. Burning a charge on a 344 piece is a real cost.
  • The token row is always available as the no-charge baseline. If your donor is not clearly better, redeem the token and keep the charge.
  • Item level bands are the drop bands for that source, not the item level you will personally see. Upgrade tracks apply on top.
  • Rule of thumb every single guide repeated: the 4-set beats perfect secondaries. Convert what you have, fix it later in the season.
